!Kraentzler1332; Norr; AF; Ancestral Roots; Americans of Royal Descent; Fortune's Knave by Mary Lide; Magna Charta Sureties 157-1. K: Giselbert Fitz-Geoffroi "Crispin." Count of Brienne in Normandy.Regent. Norr: Gislebert Crispin (Gilbert), founder of the Clare family. Named in Bec Abby charter, c1034. Birth and death dates from Norr. Other dates from Kraentzler: born about 979, died about 1040. Lide: Gilbert de Brionne. Sureties: Gilbert, Count of Brionne.
Gilbert, Count of Brionne, who was son of Godfrey, Count of Brionne, illegitimate son of Richard I, the Fearless, Duke of Normandy. [MagnaCharta Sureties, line 157-1]
Gilbert, Count of Brionne; benefactor of the Abbey of Bec in Normandy. [Burke's Peerage]
Gilbert, Earl of Brion, had two sons, Richard, ancestor of the house of Clare, and Baldwin de Brionis. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, London, 1883, p. 139, Courtenay, BaronsCourtenay, Earls of Devon]
Gislebert, surnamed Crispin, Earl of Brion, in Normandy, whose eldest son [was] Richard FitzGilbert. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant and ExtinctPeerages, Burke's Peerage, London, 1883, p. 118, Clare, Lords of Clare, Earls of Hertford, Earls of Gloucester]
In about 1026, Herleva of Falaise, the sixteen year old daughter of a tanner from Falaise in Normandie, gave birth to a son called Richard. Gilbert was the father of the child. As Herleva was not married to Gilbert, the boy became known as Richard Fitz Gilbert. The term 'Fitz' was used to show that Richard was the illegitimate son of Gilbert.
When Robert, Duke of Normandie died in 1035 William the Conqueror inherited his father's title. Several leading Normans, including Gilbert of Brionne, Osbern the Seneschal and Alan de Brittany, became William's guardians.
A number of Norman barons would not accept an illegitimate son as their leader and in 1040 an attempt was made to kill William. The plot failed but they did manage to kill Gilbert of Brionne. It is believed his killer was Ralph of Wacy.

Philip De Gai
[5.FTW]
I at one time had Philip as son of Robert de Caen, Earl of Gloucester. That error may be explained by the following excerpt from a posting by Douglas Richardson to soc.genealogy.medieval, 18 Dec 2002:
Lastly, I should mention that in recent time, there was an article on Robert, Earl of Gloucester, bastard son of King Henry I, which included information on Philip de Gay above. The material in that article was wildly inaccurate and incorrect. You can find my brief review of that article in the google archives of the newsgroup. I believe Ken Finton republished my review in a back issue of The Plantagenet Connection. This person's article is proof that historians sometimes make poor genealogists. In this particular instance, the gentleman was neither a good historian, nor a good genealogist.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
