Thankful Taylor petitioned the Legislature for help, showing that notonly was her husband's life lost but his horse and his clothes also andthat she was "left a poor widow with 11 children. By his death we aredrove from the improvement of a farm in the woods which we hoped to be a relief to us." This farm in the woods was the grant of 80 acres nearWhite Loaf Brook. The Legislature remunerated her in the sum of 12Pounds, two of which were to pay for the horse.
Between 1705 and 1716 misfortune again befell the widow Thankful when her house was burned down and much of her furniture destroyed. Her son,Thomas, was wounded at Deerfield on June 22, 1709, when the French and Indians under DeRowville made their second attack on that town.
In the following generation the family scattered considerably, for while some remained in or near their early home, John moved to Norwalk,Connecticut, in about 1698, his mother followed and was living there with him in 1724.
