iii. Nicholas, of Laxfield and Dennington, co. Suffolk, the testator of
20 Aug 1569, b. about 1517; d. between20 Aug and 28 Sept. 1569, when his
will was proved; prob. m. (1) ____; m. (prob. a second wife) Johane
Crispe, who was living 20 Aug 1569, dau. of William Crispe of laxfield.
Nicholas Fiske appears on the Laxfield muster roll in 1543, and was taxed
3d. at Laxfield in 1542-1544. In the subsidy of 1567-68 hewas taxed 2s
8d. at Dennington, on lands valued at 2 pounds, 9s. 4d. at Laxfield, on
lands valued at 4 pounds. In his will he named his wife Johane, his
father-in-law, William Crispe of Laxfield, his four children, Rachel,
Ester, Mary, and Martha, his son William and his (the testator's's wife
Johane, William's mother, and his (the testator's) son Amos Fiske. "Of
him (Nicholas Fiske), Mr Foxe makes mention in his story of John Noyes
burnt at Laxfield." (Candler Manuscripts.)

[19651] English diplomat. He fought at Pinkie (1547), was knighted in 1547, andbecame ambassador to France and Scotland. In 1569 he was imprisoned for promoting the scheme to marry Mary, Queen of Scots, to theDuke of Norfolk , but soon released. For two days after the death of Edward VI, the Duke of N orthumberland kept the news secret while heput the next stages of his plan into action.Urgent messages were sent toboth princesses, Mary and Elizabeth, bidding them to come to London tosee their brother before he died. Always wary, Elizabeth suspected dangerand stayed safely where she was, pleading ill-health. However,Mary did asshe was told and set out. Only the timely arrival of a secret message, sent by Sir Nicholas Throckmorton,saved her from falling into Northumberland's trap. His daughter,Elizabeth Throckmorton, married Sir Walter Raleigh. His nephew, FrancisThrockmorton (1554--84) was executed for planning a conspiracy tooverthrow Elizabeth I.
