George lived on land called "Rocky Point" on the east bank of St.Clement's Bay in St. Mary's County. His family still held this propertyuntil after the Revolutionary War. He had aportion of a 200 acre grant, surveyed on June 15, 1652, for Walter Pake and assigned to Rich Knevett, and lay on the east bank of St. Clement's Bay. Before 1700 it had comeinton the posession of George Medcalf, but by 1705 or there abouts,Samuel Davis had seized it by marrying the relict of George Medcalf.(Rent rolls, Liber 7-8, folio 30, land office, Annapolis, MD.
Don Drury, drury@blt.net claims b 1687
By June 3, 1718, Gerorge Thompson and John Browne in some manner becameseized of the tract,(see notes on George's father, Robert Thompson) thereupon they conveyed 146 acres to John Graves. On August 30, 1718, WilliamRoach conveyed 100 acres to John Bowles. On March 7, 1718/19 GeorgeThompson by alienation acquaried 100 acres from William Marion Farthingand James Wheatley. From that time or until some time after theRevolutionary War, George Thompson or his decendants were in possessionof "Rocky Point". On August 5, 1741, George sold a small portion toWilliam Bold. (IBID) On April 22, 1724, George Thompson and Thomas VanRiswick signes the admintration bond of James Thompson, the executor ofthe estate of Elizabeth Burrell, late of St. Mary's Co. deceased.(Testamentary Proceding Liber 24, folio 377.) On March 22, 1724/25 GeorgeThompson and Mark Herbert offered security L300 for John Vowels, theadministrator of estate of James Vowels, late of St. Mary's deceased.(Test. Proc. Liber 27, folio 155) On April 4, 1724/25 Rich Vowles, of St.Mary's by his last will and testament devised to his son, Rich Vowels, atract of land on the west side of Trap Creek, "bounded by Rocky Point nowin the possession of George Thompson: (Wills, Liber 18, folio 258) OnMarch 16, 1732/33 George Thompson and William Braborn were sureriesThomas Van Reshwick(sio) the administrator of Francis Cissel, late ofSt. Mary's Co., deceased. (Test. Proc. Liber 29, folio 281) On November1, 1737, George Thompson and Thomas Thompson became sureties forElizabeth Salemon, the administrator of Francis Cissel, late of St.Mary's Co., deceased. (Test. Proc. Liber 30, folio 381) In 1748 GeorgeThompson was mentioned in the last will and testament of John Graves Sr.of St. Mary's Co. (Wills, Liber 23, floio 274, Hall of Records) AfterJuly 14th, 1732, George Thompson married Grace Hayden, daughter ofWilliam Hayden, Sr. of St. Mary's Co., and by then she the widow ofMathew Herbert, but no issue resulted from this union, as George'syounges was born about 1730. (my own thoughts Terri)
William Hayden Sr., parent of Grace, by his last will and testament datedJuly 14th, 1732, and proven on March 6, 1733/34 devised his daughterGrace Herbert and her heirs, the plantation unnamed, whereon she was thenliving. (Wills, Liber 20, folio 902, Hall of Records) Elizabeth Haydenthe widow of Wm. Hayden and presumably the Mother of Grace HerbertThompson, died in 1761, but failed to provide for any of the Herbertgrandchildren. (Wills, Liber 31, folio 202, Hall of Records) GeorgeThompson negotiated his last will and testament on November 15, 1749, butfailed to name all his children. It was admitted to probate in St.Mary's Co. on February 6, 1749/50 by George Franwick, Philip Clarke, andJ. Thompson. (Wills, Liber 27, folio 185, Hall of Records)
Charley Moore says that it was Grace Greenwell Clarke, widow of ThomasClarke:
Grace [Greenwell], widow of Thomas Clarke who also died in the early1730's. liber 30,and folio 181, 1751'] definite proof of this lastmarriage from the settlement of George's estate by Grace on or about1751. She makes a final payment to her son, James Clarke, the son ofThomas, from what was left of
Thomas Clarke's estate.
The following is a true abstract:
"To son, William my new dwelling plantation and half of my land next toit adjoining him.
To son, George, the remainder of the plantation not willed to Wm. Wife,Grace, executrix and a life interst of one-third of dwelling plantationdevised to son, Wm.
The administration bond of the relict and executrix was signed onFebruary 6, 1949/50 for L300, with James Thompson and William Draft asher sureties." (Testamentary Proc. Liber 33, folio 111) The personalestate was appraised on February 6, 1749/50 by Samuel Abell and CharlesNeale at L207/7/9. James Thompson, Jr. and George Thompson signed asnext of kin, while James Thompson, Jr. and Clement Spick signed as thegreatest creditors. On July 16, 1750 "Came Samuel Abell and made oaththat Thomas Thompson and George Thompson two of the next of kin werepresent at the taking of the inventory". (Inventories, Liber 43, folio295, Hall of Records)
After all claims against the estate were paid, there remained a balanceof L114/9/9 of which one-third was distributed to the widow andtwo-thirds to the following children: Thomas, George, Robert, JamesSabastian, James Hayden who married Eilizabeth Thompson: Mary Thompsonand William Thompson 21 years old October next. (Administration accounts,Liber 30, folio 181) I believe that Mary and William were the youngestand may have been twins, Terri's thoughts James Thompson, son of Georgedied interstate, when letters of administration were issued to GraceThompson on January 10, 1758. Her bond in amount of L200 was signed byJohn Johnson and James Hayden. (Test. Proc., Liber 37, folio 218)
