Robert joined Simon de Montfort's rebellion in 1265 and forfeited his castles when de Montfort was killed at Evesham. In 1266, Robert rebelled again, was defeated at Chesterfield and imprisoned in Windsor Castle where he died in 1279.
Tutbury Castle was confiscated by the crown on Robert's arrest.
