HENRY DE BOHUN, hereditary Constable of England, was son and heirof Humphrey DE BOHUN, also hereditary Constable of England, by Margaret, widow of Conan (le Petit), DUKE of BRITTANY and EARL OF RiCHMOND, anddaughter of PRINCE HENRY OF SCOTLAND, EARL OF HUNTINGDON,by Ada, daughterof William (DE WARENNE), EARL OF SURREY, and grandson of another Humphreyde Bohun by Margaret, eldest daughter and eventually coheir of Miles (ofGloucester), Earl of Hereford and Constable of England. Havinginheritcdthrough his aforesaid grandmother the principal estates of theformerearls, hewas created, 28 April 1200, by charter dated atPorchester, EARL OF HEREFORD. After the coronation he was sent (1200)with the Bishop of Durham andthe Earl of Norfolk to conduct his uncleWilliam, King of Scotland, to do homage at Lincoln. Siding with theBarons, he was one of the 25 appointed to securethe observance of theGreat Charter, and was among those excommunicated by thePope. After thedeath of King John he adhered to the party of Louis of France, and foughtatthe Battle of Lincoln, where he was taken prisoner 20 May 1217. In1220, he appears to have started on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Hemarried Maud, sisterand (in 1227) heir of William (de MANDEVILLE), EARLOF ESSEX, and daughter of Geoffrey (FITZPIERS), EARL OF ESSEX, by his 1stwife, Beatrice, eldest daughterand coheir of William DE SAY, ofKimbolton, Hunts, and Saham, Norfolk. She married, 2ndly, Roger DE DAUNTESEYE, of Dauntsey, co.Wilts. On the dcath ofher brother, the said William (de Mandeville), Earlof Essex (8January 1226/7), sbe appears to have become suo jure COUNTESSOF ESSEX. She and Roger de Daunteseye, her second husband, had livery ofber inheritance 29 October 1227 and 22February 1227/8, and thus PlesheyCastle in Essex and another great estate, together with the Earldom ofEssex, came to the de Bohuns. On 24 April 1233 (a divorce having beenpronounced. in court christian in ecclesiastical form, between Roger deDaunteseye and Maud, Countess of Hereford, late his wife) she had liveryof her inheritance then in the hands of the said Roger, but afterrevocation of the sentence of divorce the said Roger had livery of herlands in July 1236. She died 27 August 1236: he was living in August1238. [CP 6:457-9]
