This Joseph is widely accepted as the probable father of Mary Ball, mother of George Washington. This had been very questionable in my mind because Colonel William Ball would have been at least 63 years old at the time of conceiving the father of Mary and even older when fathering a second son named Joseph [tradition is that Colonel William Ball married a widow, Mary (various surnames), at age 63 and had Mary and the second Joseph (Joseph not confirmed)].
I had previously recorded this Joseph's brother, Captain William Ball, as the father of the Joseph Ball (wife Mary Spencer) as the father of George Washington's mother. However, I now have joined the supporter's that this Joseph is the maternal grandfather of George Washington. Information that Mary's father "died early in her life" and "by 13 her mother was also dead" and other accepted data, e.g., the name and other husbands of this Joseph's wife and who the other Joseph Ball was, lends acceptance to what is recorded herein.
Joseph's will was dated June 25, 1711 and probated July 11,1711. He was a civil Lieutenant Colonel of Lancaster County, Virginia; staunchand liberal supporter of the Established Church; and a Vestryman.
